Product seeding for brands

Product seeding for brands: how to run it, what it costs and which tools help.

Product seeding means sending free product to creators with no guaranteed post. To run it, pick 30 to 100 creators who already post about your category, ask before you ship, track who posts for 30 days, then pay the creators whose content works for usage rights or a paid post. The base cost is product and shipping.

Who this is for

For brand owners launching a product or a new SKU, and for in-house PR, social and influencer teams who seed every season. Seeding is cheap and slow; it works best as the top of a funnel that ends in paid UGC.

Brand owners

Seed 30 to 50 nano and micro creators around a launch. Expect only some to post, and treat the ones who do as your shortlist for paid work.

In-house brand teams

Run seeding as a pipeline with a tracker: list, opt-in, ship, follow up, convert. Feed the winners into paid UGC, ambassador or affiliate programs.

Pay instead if

you need guaranteed content by a date, or rights to run it as ads. Commission paid UGC; see UGC ads for brands.

Step by step

How to run a product seeding campaign, step by step

  1. Set the goal and the expectation

Awareness around a launch, content you can license for ads, or reviews. Decide up front whether this is pure gifting with no obligation, or gifting plus a paid post, and say so in the first message.

  2. List 30 to 100 creators who already post your category

Nano and micro creators reply more and cost less to convert later. Pick by recent content, not follower count, and ship domestically where you can: US, UK, Canada and Australia pools are on the directory.

  3. Ask before you ship

A short message: what the product is, that there is no obligation, and a request for an address and any size or shade preference. Unsolicited parcels waste product. The outreach email generator drafts it.

  4. Ship with a short note

Say what the product is for, one angle you think their audience would like, your handle or hashtag, and a reminder to label the post as gifted. Do not script them; this is not a paid brief.

  5. Track posts for 30 days

Log who posted, where, views and comments, and what the content looked like. Creator tracking follows their new videos so you do not have to check by hand.

  6. Convert the winners

Pay the creators whose posts worked for usage rights to run the video as an ad, a paid post, or an affiliate or ambassador deal. That step is where seeding becomes a revenue channel.

Costs

What product seeding costs beyond the product

Seeding itself costs your landed product cost plus postage per creator. The money is in what follows: paid posts and usage rights, priced here from our influencer and UGC rate models (typical, with the range).

Posting rates from the model behind our influencer rate calculator; usage and video prices from the UGC rate calculator. Planning estimates to negotiate within, not quotes.

To run a seeded video as an ad you need paid usage rights: $40 for three months from a nano creator and $55 from a micro creator in our model. If ten of 50 seeded creators post and you license the best three micro videos for three months, that is $165 ($120 to $270) on top of product and shipping.

If posting is not enough and you need a specific video, commission it: a 15 to 30 second UGC video is $150 from a nano creator and $225 from a micro creator. See micro-influencer rates for the full table.

Our product

Where UGC Agent fits, and where it does not

Use UGC Agent when

  • You build the seeding list yourself: filter 22,579 nano and 5,060 micro UGC creators by niche and country, each with a public email to ask before you ship.
  • You track who posted: creator tracking follows saved creators' new videos, from 25 creators on Pro to 300 on Ultra.
  • You run the pipeline in one place: lists, tags and a CRM board from New to Contacted, Replied and Booked.

Pick something else when

  • You want someone else to recruit creators, ship product and guarantee posts. Statusphere, Stack Influence and Minisocial are managed services built for that.
  • You need Shopify gifting links, affiliate codes and payouts in one tool. Creator management software such as Modash or GRIN covers those.
  • You need YouTube or Pinterest creators. UGC Agent covers Instagram and TikTok only.

Plans: Pro $29/month (200 creator leads a month), Premium $59/month (5,000 leads, 5 seats, MCP) or Ultra $199/month (no caps, API, 10 seats), each starting with a 3-day free trial that shows every creator in full; emails and export unlock when the paid plan starts. See pricing.

Definitions

Product seeding, influencer gifting and paid UGC

Product seeding and influencer gifting both send free product with no guaranteed post; seeding usually means a planned wave to many creators around a launch. Paid UGC is the opposite trade: you pay a fee and get a specified video with rights on a date.

Most programs use both. Seeding finds the creators who like the product and post about it unprompted; paid UGC turns the best of them into ad creative you control. Skipping straight to paid works too, but you lose the signal of who would have posted anyway.

Markets

Seeding across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and the Nordics

Ship inside the creator's country where you can; duties and slow customs kill launch timing. In our October 2026 index the United States (9,750) and the United Kingdom (3,799) have deep pools; Canada (453), Australia (361), Finland (261), Germany (341) and Norway (76) are smaller, so list them first and seed in smaller waves.

Gifted posts still have to be disclosed. In the US the FTC expects creators to say when a product was free; in the UK the ASA and CMA expect gifted content to be labelled. Put the reminder in the parcel note and the first message.

Results

What to expect from a seeding wave

There is no reliable public benchmark for how many seeded creators post, and anyone quoting one is guessing about your product. Plan for a minority, measure your own posting rate per wave, and compare waves rather than chasing an industry number.

What moves the rate is fit and consent: creators who already post your category, who said yes before the parcel arrived, and who got a product they would actually use. Generic mass mailing to large accounts is the most expensive way to get nothing.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is product seeding?

Sending free product to creators or customers with no guaranteed post, so that some of them try it and share it. It is usually done in waves around a launch, and the creators who post become candidates for paid work.

How much does product seeding cost?

Your landed product cost plus shipping per creator, plus any paid follow-up. In our model a 10k-follower Instagram Reel costs about $130 and three months of ad usage on a micro creator's video about $55.

Is product seeding the same as influencer seeding?

Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. Influencer seeding stresses the creator side, product seeding the product side; both mean free product, no obligation, and a follow-up for the creators who post.

How many creators should I seed?

Thirty to one hundred for a first wave is manageable for a small team. Fewer than that and the handful who post decide everything; more and follow-up quality drops.

Do I need permission to reuse seeded posts as ads?

Yes. A creator posting about a gift does not give you the right to run their video as an ad. Agree paid usage rights in writing, with a term, before you spend on it.
