The short answer
- TikTok
- 0.99xprogram median, 7.9% hit 10x
- 1.07xprogram median, 10.4% hit 10x
- Program videos on TikTok
- 84.6%of 11,849 videos
- UGC creators on Instagram
- 81.8%of 33,094 in the index
- Per video, the platforms are close. Compared with each program's own median, Instagram is slightly ahead (1.07x against 0.99x), a gap too small to plan around on a 14-program sample.
- Brand programs post on TikTok. 84.6% of program videos and 80.4% of attributed creator accounts are on TikTok.
- Most UGC creators are on Instagram. 27,071 of the 33,094 creators in our index (81.8%) are Instagram accounts; TikTok UGC creators are fewer but bigger (median 2,944 followers against 1,712).
- Apps get more from Instagram than consumer brands do. Instagram carried 28.9% of app programs' 30-day views against 4.0% for consumer brands.
Views per video, compared fairly
Raw view totals make TikTok look far bigger, because that is where most program videos are. The fair comparison is each video against its own program's median, inside programs that post on both platforms. On that basis the two are close, and the typical Instagram video in these programs had slightly more raw views too (918 against 682).
| Segment | Videos | Programs | Median vs program median | Reached 10x | Median views |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 7,319 | 14 | 0.99x | 7.9% | 682 |
| 1,723 | 14 | 1.07x | 10.4% | 918 |
Where brand programs post
Across all 121 published programs, 4,215 of 5,245 attributed creator accounts (80.4%) are on TikTok, and Instagram carried 21.8% of 30-day program views. The split depends on the brand type: Instagram brought 28.9% of views for app programs and 4.0% for consumer brands, which run their programs almost entirely on TikTok.
Where the UGC creators are
The supply looks the other way round. In the UGC Agent creator index:
| Platform | Creators | Share | Median followers | Say "UGC" in bio | Email in bio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 27,071 | 81.8% | 1,712 | 31.6% | 43.1% | |
| TikTok | 6,023 | 18.2% | 2,944 | 54.7% | 90.0% |
TikTok UGC creators are more likely to call themselves UGC creators and to put an email in their bio, which makes them quicker to qualify and contact. Instagram has more of them. Search either with the free Instagram and TikTok creator finders, or browse Instagram beauty and TikTok beauty creators in the directory.
Length works the same way on both
On TikTok, videos of 60 seconds to 2 minutes got 1.61x against 0.89x for 15 to 30 seconds. On Instagram, 30 to 60 seconds got 1.13x against 0.69x for 15 to 30 seconds. See how long a UGC video should be.
Engagement rates are not comparable
The median TikTok video in the sample had an engagement rate of 7.2% against 1.7% on Instagram. Most of that gap is measurement: Instagram does not show shares or saves publicly, so its rate counts only likes and comments. Do not pick a platform on this number. More in what a good UGC engagement rate is.
How to choose
- Go where your buyers watch. Per video the platforms perform about the same, so the audience decides.
- Expect more creators to choose from on Instagram, and faster contact on TikTok.
- Want both platforms? Say so in the brief and the contract; cross-posting is not a given.
Method
Views: 9,042 brand videos from the 14 fully scanned programs with at least 10 videos on each platform, 1 August 2026 to 30 October 2026; each video compared with its own program's median across both platforms (UGC video benchmarks 2026). Program accounts and view shares: 121 published programs in UGC Brands, measured 14 May 2026 to 30 October 2026. Creators: 33,094 Instagram and TikTok accounts in the UGC Agent index qualified as UGC creators, snapshot 31 October 2026 (UGC creator statistics 2026).

Limitations
- Only 14 programs posted enough on both platforms for the per-video comparison; most of them are apps.
- Instagram engagement and view counts are what the platform shows publicly, which hides shares and saves.
- The creator index holds creators the app found while running searches, so it reflects where brands search as well as where creators are.
