Product demo video

A product demo video shows a product's features working on camera, step by step, so a viewer can see exactly what it does before buying.

What counts as a product demo video

A product demo video is a recording that walks a viewer through what a product does, feature by feature, with each claim shown working on camera. In UGC, a creator handles the product themselves, narrates what they are pressing, pouring or opening, and lets the result appear in the same shot, so the proof is visual rather than a promise.

A tutorial video is the closest neighbour and is often confused with it. A demo answers the question of what this thing does. A tutorial shows the viewer how to get to an outcome, such as a finished hairstyle, and the product is one tool on the way. Demos sell features; tutorials sell outcomes.

How brands use demos in UGC

Demos suit products with a visible mechanism: gadgets, kitchen tools, apps, cleaning products, anything that changes on screen. Give the creator a ranked list of the three features that matter most and ask them to show each one in a single uninterrupted take, because a cut at the moment of proof makes viewers suspect editing.

Most brands run demos as paid ads lower in the funnel, retargeting people who already watched a hook-led video. For software, ask for screen recordings alongside the face-to-camera footage so the editor can cut between them. The UGC ad examples guide shows how demo segments sit inside longer ad structures.

Example: a cordless vacuum demo

Shot list sent to the creator: pour cereal on a rug and vacuum it in one pass; switch to the crevice tool on a car seat; show the dustbin emptying with one click; hold the battery display to camera at the end. Each feature gets its own take, recorded in natural light, with the creator explaining it in their own words.

Deliverables: a 30 second demo with on-screen labels, a 15 second version built only around the rug shot, and the raw takes. The rug moment is the proof, so it opens the short version.

Common mistakes

Brands often list ten features. The creator rushes through all of them and none lands. Pick three, and move the rest into a separate video if they matter.

The other mistake is staging a result the product cannot repeat. If the demo relies on a special surface or perfect lighting that real buyers lack, reviews and returns will expose it. Film in the conditions a customer actually has, and keep claims inside what your legal and product teams have approved.

How it's used

  1. Let's brief a straight product demo for retargeting: three features, one take each, no music.

  2. Can the creator show the lid locking in one take? A cut at that moment makes the demo look staged.
