UGC ads

UGC ads are paid social ads built from creator-made, phone-shot video that looks like a customer’s own post rather than a studio commercial.

What makes an ad a UGC ad

Three traits. It's filmed by a real person, usually on a phone, in a real setting. It's presented as an opinion or a demonstration, not a brand announcement. And it runs as paid media, which is what separates it from organic UGC a customer posted on their own. The creator is usually paid to produce it, so it's commissioned content in a customer style.

The format works because feeds train viewers to skip anything that looks like an ad. A creator holding the product and talking to camera reads as content for the first second or two, which is long enough to earn the next five.

Three ways to run creator content as ads

Upload: the creator delivers a file, you run it from your ad account under your handle. Cleanest for creative testing because you control every cut. Whitelisting (Meta calls it partnership ads, historically "branded content ads"): you run the ad from the creator's handle with their permission, which keeps the creator's identity on the ad. TikTok Spark Ads: you boost the creator's actual post using an authorization code.

Each needs usage rights in writing. Upload needs paid usage on the file; whitelisting and Spark need the creator's account-level authorization for a defined period.

A sample 3-ad test set

Brief one creator on the same product with three different openings, then run all three against the same audience for a week. Ad A, problem hook: "I tried four sleep sprays before this one worked." Ad B, demo hook: the product in use in the first frame, no intro. Ad C, objection hook: "I thought this was overpriced until I checked the ingredient list." Keep the middle and the call-to-action identical so the hook is the only variable.

Read the results by hook rate and cost per result, not by likes. Then re-brief the winning opening in two more creators' voices to see whether the angle or the person carried it. This is the loop most media buyers run continuously, and it's why they need a steady supply of creators rather than one perfect video.

How it's used

  1. Media buyer in Slack: "The UGC ads from batch three are beating the studio spot on cost per purchase, pausing the studio spot tomorrow."

  2. Brief line: "We need three UGC ads per creator, each with a different first-three-second hook and the same product demo in the middle."
