Unboxing video

An unboxing video is a creator video that opens a product on camera and shows the packaging, the contents, and the creator’s first reaction.

What an unboxing video does for a brand

The unboxing format sells the moment of arrival. The viewer watches the box open, sees the packaging, the inserts, the product itself, and hears a first reaction before any feature list. That sequence answers the question a buyer has right before checkout: what actually shows up at my door?

For brands running creator campaigns, the unboxing is usually the cheapest UGC video to brief. The product does the work. The creator needs a clean surface, decent light, and a phone. You get shipping-to-camera in a few days instead of a full scripted production.

How to brief one

Keep the brief short and specific. A workable deliverable line: one 30 to 45 second vertical unboxing, hook in the first two seconds, show the outer box, the inserts, and the product, end with the first use, no music that blocks reuse. Add the two or three things you want said out loud (the scent, the weight, the fit) and leave the rest to the creator.

Ask for the raw footage as a separate deliverable. Unboxing clips cut well into paid social ads later, and the isolated shots of the box opening are useful b-roll for your own edits.

Where it fits in a campaign

Unboxings work best for products where packaging and presentation matter: subscription boxes, beauty sets, gadgets, gifting, anything with an inserts-and-tissue-paper moment. They are weaker for software, services, and products where the value shows up over weeks of use. In those cases a testimonial or demo video carries more weight.

Treat the unboxing as the first creative in a set, not the only one. Pair it with a demo and a talking-head review from the same creator so you can test which angle converts before scaling spend. Sourcing creators who already post unboxings in your category shortens the fit check; that's the kind of filter UGC Agent applies when it scores creators against a brief.

How it's used

  1. Brief line: "Deliverable 1 is a 40-second unboxing video, vertical, showing the outer box, the welcome card, and the first application."

  2. Media buyer in Slack: "The unboxing video from the skincare creator is our cheapest add-to-cart creative this week, let's request two more variations."
