Day in the life video

A day in the life video follows a creator from morning to night in short clips, with a product appearing naturally inside an ordinary routine.

What a day in the life video is

A day in the life video is a vertical edit that follows one person through a single day, cutting between quick clips of waking up, working, eating, training and winding down. In UGC, the creator places a product inside that routine so it appears where it would really be used, rather than presenting it in a dedicated pitch or a demo.

It differs from a GRWM, which stays in one spot and covers one routine, usually getting dressed or doing makeup. A day in the life spans locations and hours, so the product competes with everything else on screen. That makes it weaker for explaining features and stronger for showing how something fits a lifestyle.

How brands brief it

Brief the routine, not the script. Tell the creator which moment the product belongs to (the morning coffee, the commute, the post-gym shower) and ask for two or three appearances across the day instead of one long mention. A single voiceover or on-screen captions usually carry the narrative, so ask for clean b-roll of each clip as well.

The format works organically on TikTok and Reels, and it can run as a paid ad if the opening clip earns attention by itself. Ask for an alternative first shot or two so the media buyer can test openings, and agree usage rights before anything goes into paid placements.

Example brief: a meal kit

A meal kit brand briefing a working parent: open on the alarm, the school run, a laptop at the kitchen table, then the box arriving at the door mid-afternoon. The product carries the evening: unpacking, a quick cook with the kids, everyone eating together. Close on the creator on the sofa, with one line about the dinner they did not have to plan.

Deliverables for that brief: one 45 to 60 second edit, a 15 second cutdown that starts on the delivery, every raw clip, and a caption file. For more briefs built in this shape, see the UGC ideas collection.

Common mistakes

The most frequent failure is a product that appears once, for two seconds, near the end. Viewers who leave early never see it. Put the first appearance inside the opening third, and make sure each later appearance does a different job, such as showing texture, use or a result.

The other is choosing a creator whose real day does not match the audience. A routine full of luxury apartments sells poorly to budget shoppers. Check that the creator's actual life looks like your customer's before you book, because the format only works when the day feels true.

How it's used

  1. Can we ask Priya for a day in the life cut where the bottle shows up at the gym and again at her desk?

  2. The day in the life video is our best organic post this month; let's license the first 15 seconds for paid.
