How creator funds work
Platforms set aside a budget and distribute it to eligible creators according to performance metrics such as qualified views, watch time, and engagement. Payouts are typically small per view and vary with the size of the pool and how many creators share it. TikTok's original Creator Fund is the best-known example, and it has since been replaced by newer programs with different names and rules.
Eligibility usually involves minimum follower counts, minimum recent views, age and region requirements, and content that meets community guidelines. Programs change names, criteria, and payout formulas often, so check the platform's current terms rather than relying on any fixed figure.
Why it matters to brands
Creator funds are platform-to-creator payments. A brand does not participate, but it does explain creator behavior. A creator earning from views has an incentive to post frequently and chase reach, which can make them cheaper to hire for content but pickier about anything that might hurt their numbers.
It also shapes rates. Fund income is rarely enough on its own, which is one reason so many creators take brand deals and paid UGC work. When a creator quotes you, they are pricing against what the same hour could earn from other sources, including whatever the platform pays.
Creator fund vs paid UGC
A creator fund pays for content that performs on the creator's own account. Paid UGC pays for content the brand owns and runs itself, often without the creator posting it at all. A UGC deal might read: "Two 30-second demo videos delivered to us, 90 days paid usage, no requirement to post on your account."
That distinction is useful in outreach. Creators who are focused on fund earnings may prefer deals that include posting to their feed; those building a UGC portfolio may prefer delivery-only work. Ask which they want before quoting.
