UGC portfolio

A UGC portfolio is a creator’s curated set of sample videos and past brand work that a brand reviews to judge on-camera quality and fit before hiring.

What a portfolio should show you

You're hiring a UGC creator for production, not reach, so the portfolio matters more than their follower count. Look for the formats you plan to buy: a talking-head review, a product demo, an unboxing, a hook-driven ad cut. If you need 9:16 ads with captions and a call to action, and the portfolio is all lifestyle montages, that's a mismatch no matter how pretty the clips are.

Check the basics on every clip. Is the audio clean? Is the face lit and in focus? Does the creator hold attention in the first three seconds? Can they say a brand's claims naturally without reading? Do the edits (captions, cuts, pacing) look like the ads you're already running?

Red flags

Spec work only, with no brand names, isn't a red flag on its own; new creators start there. A portfolio that is all spec work but claims dozens of brand partnerships is. Other warning signs: every video in the same room with the same lighting (limited range), clips with visible platform watermarks (reposted, not original files), heavy filters or synthetic voiceovers, and no vertical-format samples at all.

Missing information matters too. A serious portfolio states rates or a starting price, turnaround time, and what usage rights are included. If none of that is there, expect to negotiate everything from scratch.

How to use portfolios in sourcing

Review portfolios after you've filtered for niche fit, not before. Watching 200 portfolio reels is slow; watching 25 from creators who already post about products like yours is manageable. A practical scoring line for a shortlist: niche match, format match, on-camera quality, and responsiveness, each rated 1 to 3, and anyone under 8 total drops off.

Then confirm with a paid test. One video at the creator's standard rate tells you more than any portfolio, and it costs less than a wrong five-video order. Ask for the raw footage on the test so you can see how they shoot, not just how they edit.

How it's used

  1. Sourcing note: "Only advance creators whose UGC portfolio includes at least one 9:16 talking-head ad with captions."

  2. Creator outreach reply: "Here's my UGC portfolio link with recent skincare demos, rates start at a flat fee per video and include 3 months of ad usage."
