What a brand deal covers
The term is broad on purpose. It includes a sponsored post on a creator's own account, a batch of videos delivered to the brand for ads, an affiliate arrangement, or an ongoing ambassador retainer. What makes it a deal rather than a gift is the exchange: the creator commits to defined deliverables and the brand commits to defined compensation.
For a brand, the useful split is between reach deals and production deals. A reach deal pays for the creator's audience, so follower count and engagement matter. A production deal pays for usable content, so the creator's on-camera skill and fit with your product matter more than their following. Most UGC creator work is the second kind.
What should be in writing
Every brand deal needs five things agreed before filming: deliverables (count, length, format), timeline, fee and payment terms, usage rights (where the brand can run the content and for how long), and exclusivity (whether the creator can work with competitors, and for how long). Skipping usage rights is the most common mistake; it comes back when you want to turn a post into a paid ad three months later.
A minimal example: two 30-second vertical videos plus raw footage, delivered in 10 business days, flat fee paid 50 percent on signing and 50 percent on delivery, 6 months of paid usage on Meta and TikTok, no category exclusivity. That's enough for a first collaboration and it fits on one page.
How brands find and price deals
Creators price deals by what they think the content is worth to you, which varies by niche, experience, and how much usage you ask for. Rate ranges you see online are rough conventions, not a market rate, so ask for a rate card and compare it against your own estimate. Longer usage and exclusivity should raise the fee; a single organic post with no reuse should not.
Sourcing is the other half. The creators who respond to cold outreach are usually smaller accounts already making product content in your category. Building a short list of those, with emails, is the first pass before any deal gets negotiated.
How it's used
Creator outreach line: "We're offering a paid brand deal for two vertical videos with six months of ad usage, and we can send the product this week."
Founder to agency: "Cap each brand deal at three creators this month so we can compare content quality before committing to retainers."
