Creative strategist

A creative strategist is the person who decides what ads to make and why, turning customer research and performance data into briefs, hooks, and test plans.

What a creative strategist does

The creative strategist sits between the media buyer and the people who make the ads. They read the ad account, watch what's winning and dying, mine reviews and comments for language, and turn that into a testing plan: which angles to try, which hooks to write, which formats to shoot.

In a DTC or agency team the job is largely writing briefs. A typical week includes a hook list for a new product, a concept doc for three UGC videos, a rundown of last week's test results, and a short list of creators who fit the next batch. The role exists because media buying got automated and creative became the main lever.

What they ask creators for

A creative strategist briefs UGC creators with specific angles, not vibes. Example deliverable list from a real-world style brief: "Three 20 to 30 second videos: one problem-agitate hook, one unboxing with a price callout, one 'I was skeptical' testimonial video. Raw files plus one edit each, vertical, no music."

They also ask for modularity. Separate hooks, separate B-roll, separate CTAs, so the editor can build ten variations from one shoot. Creators who deliver clean, labelled files get rebooked; creators who send one polished cut with baked-in music don't.

How they judge UGC

The strategist rarely judges on taste. They judge on hook rate, hold rate, click-through, and cost per purchase, then ask why the winner won. Was it the creator, the angle, the first three seconds, or the offer? That answer becomes the next brief.

Good strategists keep a creator roster with notes on who can act, who can demo, who reads scripts naturally. Sourcing new creators is part of the job, since a testing program burns through faces quickly and audiences tire of the same person. Creator search tools shorten that part of the loop.

How it's used

  1. Our creative strategist wants six new UGC creators a month so we never run the same face for more than four weeks.

  2. The creative strategist's brief lists the hook, the proof point, and the CTA for each video, so shoot them as separate clips.
