What an influencer discount code is
An influencer discount code is a promo code assigned to a single creator, such as MAYA15, that gives that creator's audience a discount at checkout. Every order using the code is credited to the creator, which lets the brand measure sales from the partnership and pay commission on them. Codes also catch buyers who never click a link.
Codes and links measure different behaviour. A tracked link captures people who tap through from a post; a code captures people who remember it and type it in later, often on another device. Most programs give creators both, and affiliate commission is paid on whichever one the order carries.
How brands use codes with creators
The code is generated in the store platform, tied to one creator, and set with a discount, an expiry date and usage limits. The creator mentions it on screen, in the caption and often in a pinned comment. Sales are reported per code in the store's analytics, and the campaign ROI calculator turns those totals into a cost per customer.
Codes undercount. Some buyers see the post and later search for the brand directly, never using the code. Treat code sales as a floor rather than the full effect, and compare them with branded search and total sales during the posting window, the idea behind incremental lift.
A worked example
A coffee brand gives ten creators codes for 15 percent off, valid for 30 days. Redemptions range from 4 orders to 120. The brand moves the top three onto paid deals, keeps four more on commission only, and stops working with the three whose codes barely moved.
It also notices one code appearing on a coupon aggregation site, with orders from people who never saw the creator. That code is retired, replaced with a new one, and limited to one use per customer.
Common mistakes
Making the discount too generous trains customers to wait for a creator code and erodes margin on buyers who would have paid full price. Set the discount at what the creator's audience needs to act, not what looks impressive in the caption.
Judging every creator on code sales also misleads. Creators who make content for your ads rather than for their own feed will show almost no redemptions while their videos drive sales elsewhere. Use codes for posting partnerships and ad metrics for UGC ads.
How it's used
Can we see code redemptions by creator for last month? I want to know who to renew before we plan Q1.
Each creator gets a unique 15 percent code, one use per customer, expiring 30 days after their post.
