Flat lay

A flat lay is a photo shot straight down onto products arranged on a flat surface, used in UGC photo sets, social posts and carousel ads.

What a flat lay is

A flat lay is a photograph taken from directly overhead of products and props arranged on a flat surface such as a table, bedsheet or floor. The camera points straight down, so every item reads clearly at once. Brands buy flat lays as part of UGC photo sets for organic posts, product pages, email and carousel ads.

It differs from a lifestyle shot, where a person is using the product in a real setting. A flat lay is styled and still; it shows what is in the box or the routine. Many carousel ads pair the two, opening on a flat lay of the kit and following with in-use frames.

How brands brief flat lays

Specify the surface, the light and the props. Window daylight, a plain or textured background in your palette, and a short list of props that fit the customer's life all keep a set consistent across creators. Name the products that must appear and whether packaging should face the camera.

Ask for each shot in both a square and a 4:5 crop, plus a version with empty space for text. The UGC photo examples guide has brief wording for flat lays and the other still formats brands commission alongside them, including unboxing stills.

A worked example

A coffee subscription brand wants a launch carousel. Each of three creators shoots the box, the bag, a mug and a grinder on their own kitchen counter from above, in morning light, with no hands in frame. One frame per creator leaves clear space in the upper third for a headline.

Because the brief fixed the angle and props but not the counter, the three sets look related while each still feels like a real home. The brand uses the strongest frame as the first carousel card and puts the others to work on its owned channels.

Common mistakes

Overstyling is the classic error. A flat lay crowded with props stops looking like something a customer made and starts looking like a stock photo, which defeats the point of buying UGC. Keep the product the largest object in the frame.

Shooting at a slight angle is the other. A camera tilted even a little distorts packaging and makes labels hard to read. Ask the creator to shoot from a step or a phone stand directly above, and to check that the edges of the surface run parallel to the frame.

How it's used

  1. For the photo set we need two flat lays per creator: the full kit from above, and one with space at the top for copy.

  2. This flat lay has too many props. Can she reshoot with just the serum, the box and a towel?
