Creator retainer

A creator retainer is a recurring monthly fee that buys a set volume of content or posts from one creator, replacing one-off bookings with a standing deal.

What a creator retainer is

A creator retainer is an ongoing arrangement in which a brand pays one creator a fixed fee each month for an agreed volume of work, such as eight UGC videos or four sponsored posts. It replaces booking each job separately. They typically run for a few months at a time, with a notice period either side can use to end the deal.

A retainer differs from a brand ambassador deal mainly in what is being bought. An ambassador is paid partly for association and public loyalty, often with exclusivity. A UGC retainer is a production arrangement: steady output delivered as files, with the creator free to keep working for non-competing brands.

How retainers work for UGC teams

Brands move a creator to retainer once that person has produced at least one winning ad and the team wants more variations quickly. The monthly fee is usually a little below the sum of the same videos booked one at a time, in exchange for guaranteed work for the creator and priority turnaround for the brand.

The agreement should state monthly volume, what happens to unused capacity, how briefs arrive, revision limits, and the usage terms that apply to every video delivered under it. Compare the monthly figure against per-video pricing on UGC video rates before agreeing.

A worked example

A meal kit brand has one creator whose kitchen videos keep beating its other ads. Instead of booking batches, it offers a six-month retainer: six videos a month, three hooks per video, 12 months of paid usage on each, for 1,800 dollars a month paid on the first. Briefs arrive by the 5th, files by the 25th.

Unused videos roll over for one month only, and either side can end the deal with 30 days' notice. The brand gets a reliable pipeline for creative testing; the creator gets income they can plan around.

Common mistakes

Retaining a creator before proving they can produce winners. Retain someone whose videos already work in your account, not someone whose portfolio merely looks good. A test batch of two or three paid videos is a cheap filter.

Teams also forget to refresh the brief, so month four looks like month one and the ads fatigue together. Build variety into the scope, rotating angles, formats and settings, and review output against performance every month rather than at renewal.

  2. Retainer scope: six videos per month, briefs by the 5th, delivery by the 25th, 30 days notice, unused videos expire after one month.
