What a creator brief does
A creator brief is the short document a brand sends to a UGC creator or influencer before filming. It states what to make, how many videos, the length and aspect ratio, the one message the content must land, required claims and banned claims, deadlines, revision terms and how the brand will use the footage. A good brief fits on one page.
It is not the same document as a creative brief. The creative brief is the internal strategy paper: audience, insight, positioning, the test plan. The creator brief translates that into instructions a person with a phone can follow, and drops anything the creator does not need. A UGC campaign usually has one creative brief and several creator briefs.
How brands use it on a UGC job
Send the brief before the price is final, because scope drives the rate. Creators quote differently for one raw clip than for three edited cuts with usage rights for paid social, so the deliverables list and the usage line belong in the first message, not after the product ships.
Most teams keep a template and change four fields per job: hook ideas, talking points, deliverables and deadline. The structure of a full campaign version is laid out in how to write a UGC campaign brief, and the campaign brief generator drafts a first pass from a product description.
A one-page example
For a sleep supplement: deliver a pair of 30-second videos, shot vertical, with five minutes of raw footage. Message: falls asleep faster without feeling groggy. Must say: contains magnesium glycinate. Never say: cures insomnia or treats any condition. Film at night in a real bedroom. Hooks to try: a phone screen glowing in the dark, an alarm clock, a yawn.
Then the admin lines: first cut due ten days after delivery of the parcel, a single change round included, usage in Meta and TikTok ads for six months, disclosure as #ad if posted to the creator's own account. That is the whole brief, and every line answers a question the creator would otherwise email about.
Mistakes that cost a reshoot
Writing a script instead of a brief. Word-for-word lines make creators sound like actors, which removes the reason you hired them. Give the message and the proof points, let them say it their way, and save exact wording for legal claims.
Leaving out what you do not want. If competitor packaging cannot appear, or the product must not be shown near water, say so up front. A missing constraint is one of the usual reasons a finished video comes back for a second shoot.
How it's used
Brief is in the shared folder: two videos, one message, magnesium glycinate as the must-say, six months of paid usage. Send it before we agree on the rate.
She asked whether the hooks in the creator brief are mandatory. They are not; tell her to pick one and add her own.
