Call to action (CTA)

A call to action (CTA) is the instruction that tells a viewer what to do next, such as shop now or download the app, delivered as a line, button or end card.

What a call to action is

A call to action, or CTA, is the part of an ad, post or page that tells the audience what to do next and why now. In a creator video it usually appears three ways at once: the creator says it out loud, a text overlay repeats it, and the platform button underneath carries it (Shop now, Download, Learn more). The best ones name the action, the reward and any reason to act today in a single short line.

"Link in bio" is a weak call to action; "Tap Shop now, the starter kit is 20 percent off until Sunday" is a strong one. Specific beats clever every time, because the viewer has about two seconds of attention left at the end of a video.

Writing CTAs into a creator brief

Do not leave the ending to chance. Put the exact spoken line in the creator brief, along with the on-screen text and where it appears, and request a couple of alternative lines for the media buyer to compare. A creator will naturally improvise a sign-off; the brief decides whether that sign-off sells.

Match the ask to the funnel stage. A cold audience is more likely to accept "see how it works" than "buy now", while a retargeting audience that already visited the store can take the direct offer. One shoot can cover both if the brief asks for two endings.

Testing the ending separately

Because the call to action sits at the end, you can swap it without reshooting the hook or the body. Editors cut the same video with different final lines or end cards, then compare click-through and purchases per click. It is one of the cheapest creative tests available.

Keep the claim honest. If the creator says "free shipping", the checkout must show it, and discount claims need to match the live offer or the ad will be rejected and the comments will notice first.

How it's used

  1. Can you record two endings, one saying "try it free for a week" and one saying "use code SPRING for 20 percent off"?

  2. The middle of the video holds, but nobody clicks; the CTA is buried under music, so put it on screen as well.
