What shoppable video means
Shoppable video is video content with built-in product tags, links or cards that let a viewer tap through to a featured product and buy it, often without leaving the platform. On social it shows up as TikTok Shop product links, Instagram product tags and YouTube Shopping, and on retail sites as embedded video on product pages with an add-to-cart button.
It overlaps with affiliate selling but is not the same thing. A TikTok Shop affiliate earns commission on sales from their videos, which are usually shoppable. Shoppable describes the format, the tap-to-buy layer; affiliate describes how the creator is paid. A brand can run shoppable video with no affiliates at all, using its own content.
How brands use it with UGC
On TikTok Shop, creators tag your product in their posts and the video becomes a storefront; the brand sets the commission and supplies samples. On your own site, licensed UGC embedded on product pages puts a real person using the product right where shoppers decide, which is a separate use you need rights for.
The brief changes when the video can be bought from. Show the exact product variant early, keep the price or offer consistent with what the tag will show, and end on a clear reason to tap. The TikTok Shop creator entry covers who makes this content, and the TikTok UGC creator finder helps find them.
A worked example
A kitchenware brand lists a pan on TikTok Shop and sends samples to twenty food creators who apply through the affiliate program. Their recipe videos carry a product link, and sales are attributed to each creator automatically, so the brand sees which videos actually move units.
The best three videos are licensed for the brand's own site and embedded on the pan's product page, and two run as shoppable ads. One piece of creator content now works as an affiliate post, a product page asset and an ad.
Common mistakes
Treating shoppable as a format that sells by itself. A tag on a weak video adds a button nobody presses. The content still needs a hook and a demonstration; the link only shortens the path for people already convinced.
Ignoring rights when moving video off the platform. A creator's TikTok Shop post is not licensed for your website or your ads by default. Before embedding it or running it as paid, agree the use and the term in writing, as with any other usage rights grant.
How it's used
Ask creators to show the exact colourway in the first five seconds. The product tag links to that variant.
We want to embed her shoppable video on the PDP, so add website use to the agreement first.
