KOL (key opinion leader)

KOL means key opinion leader: a person whose expertise or standing makes their recommendation carry weight in a field, used by brands to persuade it.

What a KOL is

A key opinion leader is trusted for what they know, not for how many people follow them. A dermatologist who reviews sunscreens, a barista who judges espresso machines, a physio who rates running shoes. Their audience may be small, but it listens because the person has credentials or visible expertise.

The term comes from pharma and B2B marketing, where doctors and researchers shaped what got prescribed or purchased. It's now common in Asian markets (China's KOL and KOC system especially) and in skincare, fitness, finance, and tech, where buyers want an expert's opinion before spending.

KOL vs influencer vs UGC creator

An influencer is defined by reach; a KOL is defined by authority. Many KOLs are also influencers, but a creator with a million lifestyle followers isn't a KOL for skincare unless they have relevant expertise. A UGC creator is neither: they're hired to produce content, not to lend credibility or reach.

For a brand this changes what you buy. From a KOL you buy endorsement, and the content is often talking-head or demonstration. From a UGC creator you buy assets for your own ads. From an influencer you buy distribution. Mixing these up in a brief leads to wrong rates and wrong deliverables.

How brands use KOLs in creator campaigns

KOLs work best at the top of the funnel for considered purchases: supplements, skincare actives, software, gear. One credible explainer from a KOL can become the anchor video for a campaign, with UGC creators producing the volume of variations around it.

Example brief line: "One KOL video from a licensed esthetician explaining why we use 10% azelaic acid, plus six UGC reaction videos from creators with sensitive skin." The KOL supplies the claim; the UGC supplies proof and testing variety.

Vet KOLs harder than you'd vet a UGC creator. Check the credential, check for competing sponsorships, and agree on how much script control they'll accept. Experts protect their reputation, so expect edits and expect to pay for the authority rather than the view count.

How it's used

  1. We want one KOL in the physio space to front the launch, then micro influencers to spread it.

  2. The KOL wouldn't read our script word for word, which is fine; her own explanation tested better anyway.
